Using the balance board and the nunchuk will provide you with a low impact, high energy workout.  This will also allow you to work muscles you wouldn’t normally in the course of the game.  Players can still use their dance controller mat for game play.  (You Playstation and Xbox 360 players don’t have to feel completely left out though, you have an 8 arrow option which requires you to hit all the diagonals as well as the four regular front, back, and side arrows!)

The Wii Balance Board is a peripheral that is sold separately.  Many people already own this peripheral from the Wii Fit hit of 2008.  Wii Fit is a great fitness program, but variety is the spice of life.  And that’s why you’ll want to buy DDR 3.  It is a great aerobic exercise.  You’ll find yourself playing far longer than you ever anticipated.

This iteration of DDR, also called Hottest Party 3, includes Kid Modes for the young ‘uns and music that will appeal to all age groups.  Sound tracks include remixes from Diana Ross, Depeche Mode, Kiss, Duran Duran Pink, Rihanna, Coldplay, Moby, Lady Gaga, Jordin Sparks, Gorillaz, Natasha Bedingfield, the Black Eyed Peas, and Pitbull, to name a few.  There are also a number of Konami originals to go along with the more popular music.

And for those of us who have become bored with what our Mii’s are wearing while dancing, there are a whole slew of new costumes to choose from.  I know, it sounds a little silly, but I like watching my Mii dance.  I don’t look as good as my Mii, but part of me knows that is me up there on the television screen, and I’m impressed!

We originally bought Wii Fit.  While I still enjoy that, I find that the aerobic portion of that workout is a little on the “light” side.  I really don’t enjoy the running.  Step is okay, but I wanted an aerobic workout that was more fun.  So I asked for DDR Hottest Party 2 for my birthday.  That was over six months ago, and it still has my attention.

Here are some tips for you to help make your DDR Wii workout more effective.

Choose Workout Mode.  Sure there are other options, but workout mode allows you to dance to six songs in a row without having to stop and select your next song.  When I discovered Workout Mode, I was won over.  I could now play for about 10 minutes without interruption.  It doesn’t sound like much, but this little bit of continuous play really makes a difference.  It keeps your attention.  It doesn’t take a minute to get the next course in line, so when I’m switching to the next course, I take a quick sip of water.

Set Targets.  Once you’ve chosen workout mode, you can select what your goal is for that workout.  Note: this will be stored as your default for each time you play, until you change it.  Once changed, the new targets will be the default.  You can decide how many calories you’d like to burn, or how much time you’d like to play for.  I usually select a specified amount of time as I never really know what calories correspond to.  If you’ve signed in as yourself as opposed to Guest, the Wii will remember your preferences the next time around.

Select Your Music.  There are six pre-programmed courses, each with a different flavor.  Examples include “Twenty Something” and “Increased Stamina.”  However, there are also six courses where you can select your favorite DDR songs.  Just select a course, and then choose “Edit.”  At the beginning, I would program the same song for all six slots so that I could learn the song.  Of course, this can get really annoying for anyone within ears reach.

It’s a lot more fun than getting on a treadmill! I really love DDR,  Wii has made exercise a much more fun activity for me now.
